Are you getting stuck on your anti-racism journey? Do you want to make your work more meaningful? You might be missing something essential.

I have seen that the anti-racism work that breeds the biggest transformation and sustainable change is the process of individual self-enquiry. That brings with it some big feelings around shame, identity, guilt and fragility, to name a few. And while self-enquiry and self-awareness is key, you absolutely cannot do anti-racism in any sustainable way, alone.

Why do you need support?

On your anti-racism journey, in amongst those emotions, a big one, is sure to arise - guilt.  Guilt can often lead to over-committing, getting burnt out and then turning away from the work. Or it can manifest as apathy, disengagement, and you come to a standstill and nothing changes and then you feel guilty and/ frustrated about nothing changing. Sound familiar?

Accountability is key

For too long people have not taken accountability or responsibility for racism.  A support network helps keep you accountable to the work, and develop resilience in this area to talk through challenges, discuss emotions, experiences, ideas and actions as they arise. So that you can commit to this lifelong work, making a tangible impact.

You should not put the burden on your Black friends, family or colleagues to support you with this. You need to be in and intentionally build community with other people racialised as white (or other similar ethnic group) who want to do this work too. Whilst we each have our own work to do individually, this work must also be done in community.

That’s why in collaboration with some of my anti-racism students, who have been right where you are, we have created this complimentary accountability guide to support you.
